Resettlement: New Communities
In 2009 the large-scale resettlement of thousands of Karenni people began. They were resettled from refugee camps in Thailand to various parts of the world, including the US, Australia, Scandanavia, and the UK. Karenni people now live in various cities within each of these regions.
Within the USA, large populations are found in the cities of Houston, Phoenix, Dallas, Camden, and Ann Arbor. However, the Karenni live in more than 15 states.
Not all Karenni who wish to leave have been resettled. The camps from which the Karenni were resettled have not all been closed and some people continue to live in one of them. Some of those who were not resettled returned to Karenni State, joining Karenni populations that never left; a small percentage of the camp population moved into Thailand.
